    THE CATERER

The complete contents of the former Birch Selsdon hotel in Croydon are to be auctioned off.

The live and online auction will take place on 14 April and feature an extensive array of furniture, fixture and fittings (FF&E) from the hotel’s public areas and 181 guest bedrooms.

Birch Selsdon only traded between spring and November 2023 before permanently closing its doors. The auction therefore presents a rare opportunity for boutique hoteliers, property developers and private buyers to acquire high-quality, close-to-new furnishings.

It marked London-based interior design studio A-nrd’s first hotel project and also saw the team collaborating with award-winning furniture designer and environmentalist Sebastian Cox, who led on the rewilding of the estate’s grounds.

Together, the designers created several bespoke furniture pieces crafted from timber cut from the estate’s own land.

Auction highlights from the bedrooms include bespoke bedside tables, custom beds, bespoke cabinetry and case goods, while the dining spaces offer booth seating cladded in rough sawn estate timber as well as commercial-grade fixtures.

Contents from the public spaces include sculptures and artwork commissioned from local creators such as Michael Ruh Studio, the Yarn Collective, Olly Fathers, Chelsea Vivash, Weronika Marianna and Laurie Maun.

Birch Selsdon was launched following a £15.3m investment into the property, which boasted three bars, six meeting and events rooms, a coworking space, gym, outdoor lido, tennis court and 181 bedrooms.

The site previously operated as the De Vere Selsdon Estate before it was taken over in 2022 by a joint venture between Birch Hospitality and real estate investment firm Aprirose.

Simon Rose, lead auctioneer at Pro Auction, the company responsible for the sale, said: “This sale offers an exceptionally rare opportunity. Given the property’s incredibly short operational window, the inventory is in near-immaculate condition. Buyers are essentially acquiring contemporary furnishings at a fraction of their original procurement cost.”

The auction will be held at Birch Selsdon via live on-site bidding and a global online webcast at 10am BST on 14 April.

A viewing event will be held on-site on 13 April between 9.30am and 3.30pm BST to give prospective buyers the chance to inspect the condition of the lots firsthand.

A full catalogue of the lots and registration details for online bidding can be made here.
